Signage has been a major contributor to this pursuit from day one. Tourists young and old are becoming familiar with interactive digital signage technology, and use is at an all-time high.

With adoption rates of digital communications applications increasing so rapidly, there is constant evolution occurring in the technology.

Digital Wayfinding

* The integration between digital signs and smart phones grows closer and closer as wayfinding solutions enable users to get directions and then quickly send those directions through SMS, QR codes and other methods. Now users don’t have to remember or write down the information from the sign.

* One lesson any Vegas newbie learns fast is objects on the horizon are not as close as they appear. Exploring the Strip or your host hotel requires a lot of footwork. To help visitors, digital displays now offer step-by-step walking directions to the traditional visible path drawings on a map. The sophistication of images is improving, including 3D depictions of building layout, more accurate renderings of floor plans, and more realistic depictions of hallways and route details.

* Property asset details are available for deeper drill-down via touch interactivity. This can include deeper integration with restaurants on-property – e.g., users can view hours, menus and more. Plus, more multi-touch capability is in the mix for two-finger zooming on images, which has been popularized by iPad and iPhone interfaces.

Mobile Integration

* Some system managers are experimenting with sending text messages to mobile phones, including special offers. Typically, a person engages with the interactive screen and activates his or her profile via an affinity card or login. For example, a player loyalty system can be integrated with the wayfinding system in a casino and throughout the resort in high-traffic areas. These systems can search specific offers available that match a user profile and potentially increase redemption.

* More promotional content is augmenting basic wayfinding screens. When a user touches a map, the action triggers content in another part of the screen (perhaps a coupon code).

Cross-Platform Integration

* While video walls are nothing new, many of their eye-popping capabilities are. Not only are systems integrating promotional video into multi-screen configurations that can expand into one dazzling image or divide into a dozen separate presentations, they also are integrating social media. The video wall at MGM Grand promotes exciting events, like UCF matches, while featuring a live poll, so guests can weigh in on who they think is going to win. Bezels are dwindling, too. Seams are becoming a non-issue rapidly.

* The new solution at Flamingo involves more than a dozen screens and kiosks and serves information to personal mobile devices. The platform connects all these displays and formats through an interactive digital network that provides wayfinding, delivers special offers to visitors and enables access to Caesars Total Rewards Card loyalty program from high-traffic locations in the hotel and casino.

Signage in casino hotels is rapidly evolving from a singular application focus to an all-encompassing digital communications management focus with an emphasis on creating personalized experiences across multiple devices and platforms.

It turns out that as many as a quarter of the early cancers detected by mammography would not progress. That suggests early detection results in a great deal of unnecessary treatment and stress, according to a Harvard School of Public Health analysis of a nationwide screening program in Norway.

“Radiologists have been trained to find even the smallest of tumors in a bid to detect as many cancers as possible to be able to cure breast cancer,” lead author and visiting scientist Mete Kalager said in a school news release. “The present study adds to the increasing body of evidence that this practice has caused a problem for women — diagnosis of breast cancer that wouldn’t cause symptoms or death.”

The researchers had at their disposal a wealth of data from the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program, launched in 1996 for women ages 50 to 69. Nearly 40,000 women participated in the program, one in five of whom were diagnosed with some form of breast cancer.

But of the 7,793 women diagnosed through the program, as many as 25 percent (1,948) were overdiagnosed. The team goes on to estimate that for every 2,500 women invited to screening, only one life will be saved, while 6 to 10 women will undergo unnecessary treatment for a cancer that never would have progressed.

Put another way, regular mammography screening may result in 6 to 10 women undergoing great physical and emotional stress in order to save one life.

According to Wedeen, instead of fibers traveling through the brain in a chaotic, “spaghetti-like” pattern, they run in a grid-like pattern that is “quite elegant.”

“The crucial anatomy of the brain, unquestionably, is its connectivity,” said Wedeen. “That is the defining anatomy of the brain.”

The problem has been that the technology didn’t exist that could demonstrate what the three dimensional structure of this connectivity is.” Instead, said Wedeen, “We’ve been looking at a mess.”

“So what was needed was a way to see into this mess,” he said. To that end, Wedeen and his colleagues have been working on developing MRI technology that can map the fiber architecture of the brain.

Funded by the NIH Human Connectome Project (a collaborative effort to build a network map of the human brain), researchers at MGH, along with Siemens AG, co-developed the human connectome scanner, which is, according to Wedeen, 10 times as sensitive as existing clinical scanners.

“It’s most startling characteristic is a gradient that is 10 times stronger than the average clinical scanner,” Wedeen said. “But it’s balanced so well, it’s extremely quiet, although it is a bit of a beast from an engineering point of view. It has four parallel power supplies, so building these things and keeping them alive and well is not yet a trivial matter.”

With diffusion MRI, scientists are able to map the three-dimensional motion of water molecules in the brain. Those maps can then be run through a series of mathematical algorithms that infer from the water motion pattern the fiber architecture in question.

What are the implications of his research for diagnostic imaging? Wedeen pointed to what he calls the “800-pound gorilla in the brain boat, which is mental disease.”

“So the idea of having quantitative imaging that would be beneficial for mental health would have a revolutionary impact on the relationship between diagnostic imaging and healthcare,” he said.

Progress to integrating manned and unmanned aircraft in shared airspace has been slow, and predictions about when manned and unmanned aircraft integration may occur have been unreliable, says Brig Gen. Hans-Georg Schmidt, vice commander of the 1st German Air Division, and the elected chairman of the Military Air Traffic Management Board of EUROCONTROL.

Commercial and military aviation officials by nature are risk-averse and security-conscious, so they have been reluctant to allow manned and unmanned aircraft to operate in shared airspace. Typically UAVs operate in segregated military airspace in which conflicts with civil aircraft are rare, Schmidt told Avionics Europe 2012 attendees.

The avionics and ATM industries must meet several challenges before manned and unmanned aircraft can share non-segregated airspace safely and efficiently, Schmidt says.

First is an effective capability for UAVs to sense and avoid other aircraft. Traditionally the last line of defense for avoiding mid-air collisions has been the ability for human pilots to recognize potential conflicts with nearby aircraft and to make evasive maneuvers, when necessary.

Schmidt emphasizes that human UAV ground controllers must have the capability to intervene on a UAV’s flight plan at any time to avoid conflicts with other manned and unmanned aircraft.

UAVs must have on-board sensors, signal processing, and software algorithms to do the same thing, and UAV ground controllers also must have real-time communications and data-linking capability to help UAVs sense and avoid other aircraft, Schmidt says.

Weapons planned for the Fire Scout include a laser-guided rocket, the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS).

Navy officials saw arming this aircraft as an urgent need, “so we are pressing forward as hard as we can to get it out there,” says Jeremy Moore, the Fire Scout weapons system integration lead.

The weaponization was fast, taking place in a little over 18 months, when it usually takes at least two to three years for such a process, Moore says. A guided rocket gives the Fire Scout the ability to engage hostile threats independent of air support from shore or carrier-based aircraft.

Flight and ground tests will be conducted later this year.
